RULES AND REGULATIONS 2024

 
Article 1
EVENT ORGANIZER
 
The foutrh international Tartini competition of the city of Piran for young violinists and pianists is organized by the Music school Koper and Rotary club Portorož.

 
Article 2
DATE AND VENUE
 
The competition will take place in Piran (Slovenia) from 31th of May to 2nd of June 2024 at two different venues:
- the Vedute hall in Tartini House in Tartini square
- the Tintoretto hall (Town Hall).
Practice and rehearsals will be held at the Music School of Piran.
The Grand prize winners’ concert will be held at Tartini Theatre on Sunday, 2nd of June 2024.

 
Article 3
SECTIONS AND CATEGORIES

The competition is open to all young musicians (violinists and pianists) of all nationalities.                                                    
It is divided into three sections: Violin solo, Piano solo and Chamber music for strings with piano or Chamber music for strings without piano (3 to 6 performers).
The sections Piano and Violin solo are split into 6 competing categories:
- Piano/Violin Category 1st: participants born on or after 1st January 2013
- Piano/Violin Category 2nd: participants born on or after 1st January 2011
- Piano/Violin Category 3rd: participants born on or after 1st January 2009
- Piano/Violin Category 4th: participants born on or after 1st January 2007
- Piano/Violin Category 5th: participants born on or after 1st January 2005
- Piano/Violin Category 6th: participants born on or after 1st January 2003


The section Chamber music for strings with piano or Chamber music for strings without piano is divided into 3 categories:
- Category A: the contestants' average age is up to 12 years
- Category B: the contestants’ average age is up to 15 years
- Category C: the contestants’ average age is up to 19 years
The Chamber group is composed of minimum 3 and maximum 6 performers.

 
Article 4
PROGRAMME

Violin solo
The repertoire in Categories 1st and 2nd is free of choice, there are no compulsory pieces. In Categories 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th the contestants must perform one movement (fast or slow) from Giuseppe Tartini´s Sonatas or Concertos. The rest of the repertoire is free of choice within the prescribed duration for each category. Only original violin pieces may be performed. The entire program must be performed by heart. All repeats are played at the participant’s discretion.

Piano solo
The repertoire must include one composition from the piano opus by the Piran-based composer Bojan Glavina (*comment). The rest of the repertoire is free of choice within the prescribed duration for each category. Only original violin pieces may be performed. The entire programme must be performed by heart. All repeats are played at the participant’s discretion.

Chamber music for strings with piano or Chamber music for strings without piano
The programme is free of choice within the prescribed duration. It has to include contrasting works from at least two musical periods (baroque, classical period, romantic, impressionist, modern). All repeats are played at the participant’s discretion.The programme does not need to be performed by heart.

Performance duration for piano and violin:
- Category 1st: up to 7 minutes
- Category 2nd: up to 10 minutes
- Category 3rd: up to 12 minutes
- Category 4th: up to 15 minutes
- Category 5th: up to 18 minutes
- Category 6th: up to 22 minutes

Performance duration for chamber groups with strings ( with/ without piano)
- Category A: up to 10 minutes
- Category B: up to 15minutes
- Category C: up to 20 minutes

The judges have the right to interrupt the contestant if the prescribed time is exceeded. The pieces may be performed in any order. The original music scores must be submitted to the judges at their request. The number of the repetition is up to the performer.

Special feature of the Tartini Competition
The Tartini competition supports and encourages creativity of young musicians in the field of composing. In each discipline, participants may also perform their own original pieces for which they may receive a special award. (Original pieces are part of the competition programme.)

 
Article 5
APPLICATION AND ADMISSION FEE

Online application forms for all sections are available on the competition website: tartini-competition.com. The registration is open until all positions filled – 70 places for violin, 70 for piano and 20 Chamber music for strings with piano or Chamber music for strings without piano. The application forms should be submitted online by 20th of April 2024. Upon receiving an email from the organizer confirming the participant’s registration, proof of admission fee payment must be sent within three days of the receipt of the organizer’s email. The admission fee is non-refundable. Admission fees for individual categories:

- Category 1st Violin/Piano  – 60 €
- Category 2nd Violin/Piano  – 60 €
- Category 3rd Violin/Piano  – 60 €
- Category 4th Violin/Piano  – 70 €
- Category 5th Violin/Piano  – 70 €
- Category 6th Violin/Piano  – 70 €
- Chamber groups with strings – 40 € for each group member

An official piano accompaniment for violinists (including one rehearsal, the competition performance and the prize-winner’s concert) will be available at an extra charge:
Categories 1st, 2nd - 50 €
Categories 3rd, 4th - 60 €
Categories 5th, 6th - 70 €



Article 6
JURY

The jury is composed of leading personalities in music teaching as well as renowned musicians. The decision of the jury is final and cannot be appealed. The judges are not allowed to act in dual capacity and judge their students or contestants to whom they are related. The jury may decide not to award a prize if a sufficient standard is not met. Participants may take part in a higher category but they are not allowed to perform in two categories in the same discipline. The order of performances will be decided by random draw and will be announced on the competition website.

 
Article 7
 
The winners of the highest prizes are required to attend the Grand prize concert otherwise they may forfeit the award. By applying, the competition participants agree to cede the broadcasting rights of their competing performance and the Grand prize concert performance to the organizer, including online broadcasting.

 
Article 8
SCORING AND PRIZES

Contestants will be ranked by the following scale:
- 90 to 100 points – 1st prize, certificate and gold medal
- 80 to 89,99 points – 2nd prize, certificate and silver medal
- 70 to 79,99 points – 3rd prize, certificate and bronze medal
- below 70 points - certificate of participation

The results will be announced two hours after the last performance in each category.

Special prizes may be given for the following categories:
- 400 € for the best violin solo player in all categories
- 400 € for the best piano solo player in all categories
- 400 € for the  best string chamber group (with/ without piano)
- 200 € for the best performance of compulsory piece
- 200 € for the original own composition
- 200 €  for the most promising young solo player
- other prizes may also be awarded at the discretion of the judges


*The organizer reserves the right to postpone the competition in the event of an unfavorable epidemiological situation.
